Our day in our home town—Sorrento

We both started our morning with a run around town. My run included a minor detour which landed me in another town (Angelo) and extended my room a little longer than I planned. Kim and I actually ended together, randomly finding each other running on our street. We decided against going to local beach and instead decided to take advantage of our hotel’s roof tanning deck. We started our afternoon early and had a 4pm lunch. Most of the restaurants were closed. (I’m assuming they were changing from lunch to dinner.) We found a cute Pizzeria restaurant, _______________, and had the whole restaurant to ourselves. We had our favorite Falanghina wine (Falanghina dei Campi Flegrei D.O.C. – Grotta Del Sole),

salads, pizza, and veggies. Devouring an entire pizza is entirely normal and expected in Italy. No one shares a pizza. After we consumed our fuel for the day, and we were ready for shopping and sightseeing in Sorrento. We tried on hats and sunglasses, checked out the local beaches (which are in fact, full of local Italians), and even found a wedding occurring on a Wednesday! How beautiful to get married in Italy (except I’m pretty sure this was their actual hometown.) We found some wine tasting, but it was closed for some reason. It was a very cute cellar in the basement of a bar/ wine shop (as if Kim and I really needed another glass of wine on this trip.)

We also accomplished one of our goals for trip which was to get on some Italian boys Vespas! (Unfortunately we have yet to ride on them, we just posed for pictures!)

We stopped in our neighbors lemon groves before heading back to the hotel to pack up and head out for the evening.

Our first stop out was Foreigners club. Early in the day we had stopped by this restaurant/ club (where another Wednesday wedding was being celebrated) and found out there was live music at 8 and dancing at 9. We were sold. (This was at least worth checking out—if nothing more than for the very nice looking Italian servers.) The music was nice, but ended shortly after arrival (because of course we arrived to the place later than we had intended.) The dancing ended up being some paid professional dancers (not strippers, but there’s no better way to explain it), and so we were not partaking in the dancing. Still eager to dance, we asked our waiters were the best discotecas were. One of the hot, young waiters (not ours), Mateo, told us he would come with us at 10:30p when he was off of work. It was very interesting communicating this, and we used his boss as a translator. On our walk and broken English/ broken Italian conversations, he claimed to have to go to his mother’s house and ditched us on our walk. Apparently he didn’t like us (jk). The question from this encounter: When do you give two kisses on the cheek vs. three? That could get confusing/ awkward.

Mateo directed us to the English Inn Pub which many people had said was a hotspot in Sorrento. It wasn’t. It had potential, but I guess Sorrentoineans don’t party on Wednesday’s. There we met our friend Marco whose English was much better than Mateo’s but not perfect. (Kim and I spoke a lot of Italian this night and I decided that maybe I should learn to speak Italian. It probably wouldn’t be very useful in my life, but is just belisimo.) The most important phrase we learned from Marco “non importante” (which would end up being useful for the remainder of the trip.) His friend Luigi met us (Marco & Luigi.. haha) and we went out to find dancing. We ended up at Insoloto, the bar from the previous night, which was again, just not hopping. We danced anyway and that’s how we met Chuck Bass. That was a turn for the better. Kim and I loved Chuck. I think we took 8 photos with him in 2 minutes. He loved it, and has been called chuck bass many times before. After our photos, we were done dancing, and these boys were trying to take us to the pier and be romantic so Kim and I peaced out.

(Oh and this is the night of our 5 euro worth of Gelati…. Not Tuesday as previously posted. Whoops… I need to catch up on these blogs, all the days are blending together)
